Batteries

Batteries are a huge part of modern life. Just think of how many battery chargers you have lying around your house, on your desk at work and in your car!

Of course, our purpose here is to talk about the battery in your vehicle. When someone comes into Jammin’ J Automotive and it is determined that they need a new battery, normally, they aren’t really excited about having to replace it. However, the fact is that 70 percent of batteries don’t make it for more than 4 or 5 years with the drain our modern cars and our constant use of the accessories put on them.

There are some things that you can do to extend the life of your battery. First, keep it clean.  A dirty battery runs hotter and less efficiently, and that shortens its life. Here at Jammin’ J Auto, we have a battery service that will clean the posts on your battery, which will not only extend the life of the battery, but will assist it in doing the job it was meant to do in an effective manner.

Also, running your battery way down is bad for it. Things like running the headlights, listening to the radio or watching a DVD player with the car turned off can deeply deplete your battery. The typical battery can only take a full empty like this about 8 – 10 times before it gives up the ghost.  This situation can be prevented by minimizing how often you use your vehicle accessories without running the engine.  If you need entertainment frequently while the engine is off, maybe a portable power unit would be a better investment than running your car battery down and shortening its life span.

Always driving in short trips with lots of stops for errands can put a heavy load on our batteries and cause a situation where the battery can end up not getting fully recharged just by driving around. This constant drain on power without driving long enough for the battery to receive a full charge also shortens battery life.

The other thing that hurts your battery is exposure to extreme temperatures.  While we cannot always control this, it is good to be aware of the damage that can be sustained by your battery when temperatures are extremely high or extremely low.  Having a technician at Jammin’ J Auto test your starting and charging system regularly and especially before an extreme season change (think Summer and Winter!) can help you to know that your system is in good shape and minimize your chances of being stranded.

Now when it’s finally time to get a new battery, we can help you find the right replacement. At Jammin’ J Auto we will make sure that your new battery will meet your manufacturer’s recommendations. We will talk to you about your vehicle type, the kind of driving you do and make sure that the replacement battery that we recommend will fit your needs.

If your battery light is on, don’t drive around waiting to see what will happen – call us right away!  Give us a call today to schedule a starting and charging system test and to perform a battery cleaning service.
